As part of our Literacy program, Year 1 having been reading, discussing and exploring the children's book The Lorax written by Dr. Seuss. It chronicles the plight of the environment and the Lorax, who speaks for the trees against the greedy Once-ler. As in most Dr. Seuss works, most of the creatures mentioned are original to the book.
After reading The Lorax and watching the movie, Year 1 students explored deforestation in our modern society and how this is impacting on our environment. We brainstormed lots of ways that we could make a difference and ways we could ensure our environment stayed healthy. One of these ways was by planting trees in our gardens both at school and at home and making sure that we look after them.
We also drafted, edited and published written letters to the Once-ler on behalf of all the animals that lost their homes. We were very convincing!
